Jiang Hongwei

In the course of new poem development in the 20th century in China, one period was widely recognized as the golden times of poems. Such fascinating, romantic and happy period was the 1980s, which was deemed as the classic era of poems featured by the greatest boom, prosperity, brilliance, splendor, openness, tolerance and freedom. Of all those who have created this Great Epoch of Poems during which many excellent poems and diversified schools came on, there were many college student poets who were active in writing poems and contributed to the development of Chinese new poems while studying on the campus. In 1977 when the Cultural Revolution came to an end, China resumed its college entrance exam. A large number of young people possessing ideals and talents were enrolled by universities and colleges. Having the same passion for poems, these college students, with the three flags, i.e., inspiring idealism, practical heroism and heart-touching romanticism held, gathered in the poem community in the 1980s. This strong force of college student poets consists of more than 100,000 people in four different groups, who triggered in the society, in the poem community and on the campus the unprecedented, sensational, far-reaching, extraordinary and effective poem movement. These groups of college poets, shining like stars, wrote excellent poems and poem comments. At the same time, they organized many poem societies in close collaboration with their passion, created a number of high-quality poem periodicals and newspapers with great talents, compiled many boutique poem selections with their efforts, and organized many poem-themed activities in diversified forms with their wisdom. Because of their wonderful performance in the college student poem movement, these groups of college student poets became the most fascinating and attractive scenery in the youth cultural campaign in the 1980s. More importantly, they have become the mainstream trend in the youth culture at that time, arousing strong and active feedback among the young people, and caused positive sensation in the society. Their achievements, even today, are impressive and unforgettable.

And Pan Xichen published most poem selections that had greatest influence on his own. In 1985, he published his first selection of poems and critic articles entitled Emotional Sky. In 1986, he published the second lyric poem selection Process. Both of these two selections published more than 10,000 copies, which sparked the strong and influential “Pan Xichen Whirl” in the society and in Chinese colleges and universities. Time flies fast. The scenery of college student poems in the 1980s is now what happened two decades ago. Looking back at the history of college student poems in the 1980s and reviewing the process of those college student poet making poems, we have to admit and confirm that it is necessary for us to give them fair and objective comments on them. They are the merit poets who have made outstanding contributions to the development and prosperity of new-styled Chinese poems. It is no doubt that the college student poets in the 1980s have made great efforts for the Chinese new-styled poems to make wonderful results and reached relatively mature stage. The college student poets made utmost efforts to explore and rejuvenate the new-styled Chinese poems. They were the first to introduce to the poem community in China the philosophy and skills of overseas modern poems, update the notion of composing poems in later generations, and enrich the experience of making poems of later-generation poets. They were the first to show their innovative thinking, probing spirit, critical awareness, avant-garde ideas and pioneering skills, thus bringing the later poets to the new level and height. So we should hold sincere gratitude to the college student poets in the 1980s, sum up the process of their composing poems. We will always remember the excellent contributions made by college student poets in the 1980s for the development of Chinese new-styled poems.
